佛山市顺德区龙江镇，以家具生产闻名全国。在镇区尚未建成的龙湖中心公园里，有限设计工作室受邀为龙江的本地企业前进家居做一件公共艺术装置。前进家居创立至今四十五年，一直专注木质家具制作，已成为该领域的专业品牌。前进家居选用的木材来自北美黑胡桃树。大树被切割成板材，飘洋过海来到龙江，板材上再被切出家具部件，剩余木料则被当作垃圾处理。

Longjiang Town in Foshan City's Shunde District is renowned nationwide for its furniture production. In the yet-to-be-completed Longhu Central Park, YX Designers was invited to design a public art installation for Qianjin Home, a local enterprise in Longjiang. Established forty-five years ago, Qianjin Home has consistently dedicated itself to the art of wooden furniture making, emerging as a distinguished brand in the field. The wood chosen by Qianjin Home originates from North American black walnut trees. These majestic giants are sliced into planks, transported across oceans to Longjiang, and then meticulously carved into furniture components, while the leftover timber is discarded as waste.

一棵被砍伐的大树，一部分成为家具，另一部分却成为垃圾。生产一个家具，意味着大量的余料被浪费。因此，我们决定以复用余料的方式，重构一段想象中的巨木躯体，使其成为公园里休憩观湖的大家具，也让这段“重构的巨木”带人们回溯一棵树在全球贸易视野下的个体叙事。

A felled tree becomes part furniture, part refuse. Each piece of furniture signifies the loss of abundant residual material. In response, we envisioned a transformation: repurposing these remnants to reconstruct an imagined giant tree trunk, thereby creating communal furniture for repose and lakeside contemplation within the park. This "Reconstructed Giant Tree" not only serves as a functional centerpiece but also invites onlookers to contemplate the journey of a single tree within the vast tapestry of global trade.

在原本的施工构想中，我们希望以纯手工木构的方式来建造巨木躯体，但本地的施工方认为造价和工期都会超出预期，建议以其所熟悉的”做沙发”的方式来做，“里面打一个钢架，再用木料包起来”。我们欣然同意这种建造方式，认为这是有趣的——在以制造室内家具为生的龙江，按当地人熟悉的方式来做一个户外家具，是一件顺其自然的事情。

Initially, our design proposed crafting the giant tree trunk entirely from hand-carved wood. However, the local builders raised concerns about the projected costs and extended timelines. They suggested an alternative approach inspired by their expertise in sofa-making, “constructing a steel framework and enveloping it with wood”. Embracing this method, we found delight in its ingenuity—after all, in Longjiang, where indoor furniture manufacturing thrives, creating an outdoor art piece using familiar techniques felt inherently harmonious.

巨木被放置在公园后大约一年，我们回访场地，惊喜发现巨木上栖着小蘑菇，巨木边生出了不少野生花草，甚至有一窝红火蚁在此筑好了巢。被肢解的树木，得以重新回归大地，为又一轮新生提供养分。这逐渐腐朽的过程，像是一场葬礼，也是一场巨木的重构。

A year after the Reconstructed Giant Tree graced the park, we returned to witness its integration into the natural landscape. To our delight, delicate mushrooms had taken residence upon its surface, wildflowers and grasses had sprung around its base, and a colony of red fire ants had established their home within its structure. The once-divided tree had gracefully returned to the earth, nourishing the cycle of new life. This gradual decay mirrored both a solemn farewell and the reconstruction of the giant tree.
