Our urban life is inseparable from public spaces, because it carries all aspects of our daily lives and satisfies our emotional needs. In such interactions, artworks in public spaces become a "spatial system" that shapes the city's context, spirit, and quality, as well as the appeal and charm of urban communities. When we walk around a city, the sculptures that can be seen around us signify the dreams, poetry, and mission of the city.
招商时间广场作为招商蛇口乃至深圳这座城市的一个重要节点,述说着招商局的长久文化与历史,也讲述着这段历史如何在深圳蛇口延续和生长。

Today, we walk into Shekou again and recall the history of China Merchants Group as it established the Shekou Industrial Zone. Times and cities are constantly changing, but what remains unchanged is the "Shekou gene" in all members of China Merchants Group, which drives them to develop, explore, and innovate. Today, this spirit has become a part of this land and even Shenzhen, where it continues to grow and be passed down. Notable achievements here are Times Plaza and the newly completed Time Tower in 2022. 整座建筑北立面采用自然的稻黄色陶土板,富有古典气息,在阳光下显现出金色的幻彩色调,寓意着承载光阴,恒百年久远。南面采用超白透光玻璃,诠释现代和领启未来的理念。北面与南面形成鲜明对比,预示着时间广场对新时代广场精神的延续,也预示着招商局展望未来的理念。
The whole north facade of the building is composed of natural rice-yellow terracotta panels, which gives it a classical vibe. This design symbolizes the enduring passage of time, representing a timeless existence for centuries to come. The south facade adopts ultra-clear light-transmitting glass, which represents modernity and the path to the future. The stark contrast between the north and south facades indicates that Time Tower is an extension of the spirit of Times Plaza, and also illustrates that China Merchants Group is looking forward to the future.
时间广场项目呼应蛇口慢生活、绿色生态的理念,规划布局上采用前庭后院的轴线空间序列。时间广场与新时代广场之间,以商务庭院和开放商业庭院功能相结合的方式,打造人气的城市客厅,与周边小区共享商业配套,让项目在功能打造上呈现出两种截然不同的城市氛围。

The Time Tower project echoes Shekou's concept of slow life and green ecology. In terms of planning and layout, the forecourt and backyard have adopted an axial spatial sequence. Between Time Tower and Times Plaza, there is a popular urban leisure space that combines the functions of a commercial courtyard and an open business courtyard. This design fosters a lively atmosphere and facilitates shared commercial facilities with the surrounding areas, giving rise to two completely different functional urban atmospheres.

Entrusted by China Merchants Shekou Holdings, the public artwork project of the AaRT TRAART team is located between Time Tower and Times Plaza.
经典是永恒,是完美。新时代广场是时代的象征,它的经典则是无法复刻的,时间广场的经典又应该如何通过一件艺术品来演绎呢?介于新时代广场与时间广场之间,且作为商务写字楼形象代表和美化商业配套空间的艺术品,应该如何呈现呢?作为招商蛇口文化的一部分,我们打造的艺术品应该是一件承载着招商文化,且传递着招商人对这片土地的热爱和作为招商局集团其中一员的独特情感的艺术作品。
Classic represents eternity and perfection. Times Plaza is a symbol of the times, and its classic essence is irreplaceable. How should the classic elements of Time Tower be interpreted through a piece of artwork? Between Times Plaza and Time Tower, how should we present an artwork that represents the image of commercial office buildings and beautifies the supporting commercial space? As part of the China Merchants Shekou culture, the artwork we create must convey the culture of China Merchants and the love for this land, as well as the unique feelings of being a member of China Merchants Group.
可以说,一件艺术品介入城市公共空间,需要探讨的问题是多层面的、多难点的,与此同时,这件作品也必须是量身定制的。通过一件高度凝练的艺术作品来传递这些理念,这是非常困难的。我们希望为招商时间广场打造的艺术作品应该是一件独一无二的艺术地标。
It can be said that when an artwork enters the urban public space, the issues to be discussed are multifaceted and complicated. Meanwhile, the artwork must be tailor-made to suit its surroundings. It is very difficult to convey these ideas through a highly condensed artwork. We hope that the artwork created for China Merchants Time Tower will be a unique artistic landmark.
一间宅艺术是一家致力于探索艺术领域的艺术生态中心,旗下品牌TRAART是一家中国领先公共艺术机构。此次时间广场公共艺术介入项目,我们将以“精准定位·城市共生·公共链接”作为工作理念,聚焦公共艺术领域;充分挖掘蛇口在地文化,深入分析项目定位和客群需求,并对时间广场进行实地考察;以此为创意原点,提炼出最核心的艺术概念:“时间的经典”,找寻日常而不寻常、经典的诗意,赋予空间历久弥新的体验感。我们所熟知的日月,既有日常、经典、富有诗意的属性,也最能够代表时间广场的意义,传递招商局150周年的历史沉淀。
AaRT is an art ecological center dedicated to exploring the world of art, and its sub-brand TRAART is a leading public art company in China. In the public artwork project at Time Tower, we focused on exploring the world of public art with "Precise Positioning•+ Urban Symbiosis•+ Public Links" as the working concept; fully unearthed the local culture of Shekou. In addition, we conducted an in-depth analysis of the project’s positioning and the needs of its target audience, and conducted on-site research on Time Tower. Inspired by this original idea, we extracted the core artistic concept: "the Classic of Time" by looking for day-to-day, unusual, and classic poetry, and endowing the space with a sense of timelessness. The sun and moon that we are all familiar with are not only daily, classic, and poetic, but also best represent the meaning of Time Tower, conveying the historical legacy of China Merchants Group ' 150-year journey.
因此,2022年12月26日正值招商局集团成立150周年之际,一间宅艺术TRAART团队邀请国际知名艺术家桥本敦史于深圳蛇口核心区的新时代广场与时间广场之间,以其代表性系列作品《MOON》为理念,以“时间”的经典概念,量身定制一件独属招商、时间广场记忆符号的艺术作品,实现项目愿景,让坐标成为地标!
Therefore, on December 26, 2022, on the 150th anniversary of the establishment of China Merchants Group, the AaRT TRAART team invited the internationally renowned artist Atsushi Hashimoto to create a custom art piece that represents China Merchants and Time Tower's memories, and with the iconic series "Moon" as the conceptual foundation. Located between Times Plaza and Time Tower in the heart of Shekou, Shenzhen, this art embraces the timeless concept of “time,” the artwork exudes a sense of classic elegance. 艺术家桥本敦史的作品多以表现其生命体验为主。他认为艺术存在的意义在于通过建立连接与通道将自我与外界、人与自然和社会紧密联系起来。他擅长通过极简的雕塑形式,探寻人与自然的关系。他认为:“自古以来,人类就怀着对自然的敬畏之心与自然对话,并且一直试图通过揭开自然的来龙去脉来理解它。自然,无论是宇宙还是生命的复杂构造,都是由完美的秩序构成的。在我们生活的自然真理之中,功能美的极致是被自然形态所包围的。它立体地表现了‘人是自然的一部分’的事实,人为和偶然、意志和命运等人与自然的关系。”
Most of Atsushi Hashimoto’s works focus on expressing his life experiences. He believes that the significance of art is to closely connect the self with the outside world, human beings, nature, and society by establishing connections and channels. He is adept at exploring the relationship between man and nature through minimalist sculpture forms. He believes that, “Since ancient times, human beings have held a remarkable dialogue with nature, and have been trying to understand it by unraveling its inner secrets. Whether it is the universe or the complex structure of life, nature is composed of perfect order. Among the natural truths of our lives, the pinnacle of functional beauty is often enveloped by natural forms. It illustrates in 3D that man is a part of nature, the interplay of human agency and chance, willpower and destiny, and other relationships between humans and nature.”
对生命的独特体验,使得他对我们所熟知的日月有独特的理解。他认为:“太阳孕育万物,创造人类,月亮变幻莫测,垂挂夜空陶治我们的身心。正因为日月交替,形成时间流转,自古至今乃至未来,都永恒不变。”
His unique experience of life triggers his distinctive understanding of the familiar sun and moon: “The sun nurtures all things and creates human beings, while the moon is unpredictable, hanging in the night sky, and refining our bodies and minds. 《日月》,一面镜面材质象征冉冉升起的太阳,一面磨砂材质象征朦胧可见的月亮。两种材质的对比,既代表了一种新旧的对话,又代表了日月之间的永恒轮转。
In "The Sun And The Moon", the mirror material symbolizes the rising sun, and the frosted material symbolizes the dimly visible moon. The contrast of the two materials represents not only the dialogue between the old and the new, but also the eternal cycle of the sun and the moon.

因此,在象征着太阳和月亮的两个面之间,我们选取海水的波纹,寓意招商海洋文化元素与蛇口在地文化。其中,海水波纹的黑色,象征着无限的生命力,也蕴含着中国古代青铜器源远流长的历史沉淀感。此次项目,我们以艺术家亲自雕琢的海水波纹为原型,通过铜铸造工艺,打造并呈现出海水的高低起伏状态与意象,在与平滑的日月质感形成强烈对比之余,传递出蛇口片区独有的时间印象。
Therefore, between the two facades that symbolize the sun and the moon, ripple patterns were chosen, representing the fusion of China Merchants' maritime culture and Shekou's local culture. Among these, the black ripple patterns symbolize infinite vitality, and also illustrate the long-standing historical significance of ancient Chinese bronze. In this project, we took the ripple patterns carved by the designer as the prototype, and through bronze-casting technology, we created and presented an undulating and imaginative representation of seawater. In addition to forming a strong contrast with the smooth pattern of the sun and moon, it conveys an impression that is unique to Shekou.

As we step into Time Tower and approach the artwork, we can experience a diverse, all-round encounter with the "The Sun And The Moon". The alternation and changes of the sun and the moon allows us to feel and understand "The Sun And The Moon" of Time Tower—the culture and spirit of China Merchants Shekou. This also enables us to reflect upon and recollect the "The Sun And The Moon" in our own hearts. These are the exact experiences we hope that "The Sun And The Moon" can offer everyone.

公共艺术品项目所经历的过程比一般的艺术品收藏过程复杂得多。尤其在大型公共艺术项目中,从最开始的匹配艺术家到确定艺术作品,到艺术品的制作与完成后的有效管理,专业艺术机构每个阶段的执行都具有举足轻重的地位。
The creative process of a public art project is much more complicated than the general art collection process. This is especially the case for large-scale public art projects. From the initial matching of artists to the determination of themes, to the production and effective management of completed artworks, the implementation of each stage by professional art company is very important.
公共艺术品的制作,也不同于一般的艺术家个人创作。每一件公共艺术品从艺术家以往擅长制作的完美小作放大到可以满足公共空间对艺术品需求的尺度大小,其中所经历的雕塑造型优化与工艺制作的难度是我们难以想象的。因此,整个项目从艺术家创作灵感启发,到艺术品深化设计与制作,近3个月的时间中,一间宅艺术TRAART深化团队与艺术家桥本敦史保持深度的联络与沟通。
The production of public artworks is also different from the individual creations of regular artists. Each public artwork undergoes a remarkable transformation, scaling up from the artist's mastery of small-scale pieces to the large-scale demands of public spaces. The process involves sculptural refinement and optimization, and translating intricate details and artistic vision into a larger scale. The complexity of these projects are truly beyond our imagination. Therefore, from the artist's creative inspiration to the deepening of the design and the production, in the past three months, the AaRT TRAART optimization team has maintained in-depth contact and communication with artist Atsushi Hashimoto.
在艺术品深化过程中,一间宅艺术TRAART深化团队在视觉体验方面最大的挑战是如何将艺术家的40cm高度雕塑艺术品放大到450cm的尺度,同时能够最大程度地保留雕塑的精细度。因此深化团队在3D电脑文件深化过程中,将整个雕塑侧面深色部分的凹凸,根据原作的肌理纹路进行了重新绘制,并且根据放大后的尺寸、其与行人观览的视角和室外空间的特点,与艺术家桥本敦史一同对雕塑肌理纹路进行了二次创作。
During the artwork optimization process, the biggest challenge for the AaRT TRAART optimization team in terms of visual experience was how to enlarge artist's 40cm-high sculpture to a size of 450cm while retaining its fineness to the greatest extent. Therefore, during the optimization process of the 3D computer file, the optimization team redrew the dark concave and convex parts across the entire sculpture according to the pattern of the original artwork. Then, by considering its enlarged size, the viewing angle of pedestrians, and the characteristics of the outdoor space, the optimization team worked with artist Atsushi Hashimoto to re-create the sculpture's pattern.

由于作品置于室外,同时作品的颜色有不锈钢金属原色与深棕色铜色两色,深化团队综合考虑各种因素,决定采用铸铜与不锈钢锻造的方式,将整个雕塑的表皮作为基材进行制作,以不锈钢镜面和磨砂面两种面层处理方式去传递日月交相辉映的美好愿景,介于日月之间的铸铜部分,其最外层采用热着色的方式还原了艺术家对于经典永恒的情感表达。
Since the work is placed outdoors, and the color is the original stainless steel and dark brown bronze, the optimization team considered various factors and decided to adopt a bronze and stainless steel forging method. They used the surface of the entire sculpture as the base material, and used two surface treatments on the stainless steel to create a mirror-like surface and frosted surface to convey the beautiful vision of the sun and the moon reflecting each other. The copper casting portion, situated between the sun and moon, was treated with a hot-coloring process to restore the artist's emotional expression of timeless classic elements.
在这件雕塑的结构设计方面,一间宅艺术TRAART深化团队也面临着巨大的挑战。
In terms of the structural design of this sculpture, the AaRT TRAART optimization team also faced a huge obstacle.
首先,此次艺术品本身类圆饼的形态势必会导致结构接地部分的相对细小,同时,非镂空的造型也会增加迎风面积。其次,雕塑两侧的不锈钢部分实则为两个单曲面形体在立体空间不同角度及程度的布尔运算。如何从工程制作的角度去最大化地还原及保证未来不同材质交接关系的准确性,是此次深化设计需要重点思考的内容。
First of all, the pancake-like shape of the artwork would inevitably lead to a relatively small part of the structure touching the ground. At the same time, the non-hollow shape would also increase the wind-facing area. Secondly, the stainless steel parts on both sides are actually Boolean operations of two single-curved shapes at different angles and degrees in three-dimensional space. How to maximize the accuracy of reproducing and ensuring the future precision of different material junctions from an engineering perspective is a crucial aspect that requires significant consideration in this in-depth design process.
针对上述的两个问题,一间宅艺术TRAART深化团队首先明确了雕塑的中心需要一个直通顶部的主龙骨,再根据整体造型的扭动增加外侧的弯管结构体,随后对整个雕塑的基本受力体系进行受力计算,在完成计算后根据外部的表皮去生成纵横插板,来保证未来生产制作时基材赋形阶段具备物理空间的附着基本面,同时为了方便制作与节省工艺成本,纵横板采用直板切割的方式进行设计,能够有效地缩短工期。
In response to the above two problems, the AaRT TRAART optimization team first determined that the center of the sculpture required a main keel that extends right to the top. Following the twisting of the overall shape, an outer bend pipe structure was added, and then a calculation of the basic force system of the entire sculpture was carried out. After completing the calculations, they generated vertical and horizontal connecting plates based on the external surface to ensure that the future production process had a well-attached base for shaping the material. At the same time, in order to facilitate the production and reduce costs, the vertical and horizontal plates were designed for straight cutting to effectively shorten the construction period.

进入到制作阶段,为了尽量压缩艺术品生产的时间,并且更加合理化地控制运作的模式,我们选用了两家业内顶尖的在地工厂进行合作生产,一家工厂专注于生产内部骨架与不锈钢面层部分,另一家工厂专注于生产铸铜部分,最后落地安装时将两家制作商所制作的成品拼装在一起,并安装到位。为了控制最终两家工厂的成品是处于完全一致的基准面上,我们制作了两套一模一样的金属内插板骨架作为双方团队的共同基础,实现了时空不同但进度互不干扰的生产模式。最终以基本无偏差的状态进行了合模。
After entering the production stage, in order to shorten the production time and streamline operations, we cooperated with two top local factories in the industry. One factory produced the internal framework and stainless steel cladding, and the other produced the cast bronze sections. When it was finally installed on the ground, we assembled the finished products from the two manufacturers and installed them in place. To ensure that the final products from both factories aligned perfectly on a consistent reference plane, we created two sets of identical metal insert plate frameworks as a shared foundation for both teams. This allowed us to achieve a production method that operated in different times and places, but did not interfere with each other's progress. In the end, the mold was closed with almost no deviation.

除了艺术品深化与制作的难度,一间宅艺术TRAART团队还面临着来势汹汹的疫情。12月20日凌晨4点作品在项目现场进行正式落地安装,来自惠州和厦门的团队与深圳的团队,在完成艺术品落地安装的过程中,即便接二连三地受到疫情的影响,但他们始终坚持到最后一刻,对作品进行最后的制作与调整,以至完美。
In addition to the difficulty of optimizing production, the AaRT TRAART team also faced the menacing COVID-19 pandemic. At 4 a.m. on December 20, the artwork was officially installed at the project site. When completing the installation, even though the teams from Huizhou and Xiamen, as well as the Shenzhen team were affected by the pandemic one after another, they persisted until the very last moment, making final adjustments and refinements to the artwork to ensure perfection.
今天,当我们回看这段记忆,可以发现对于每个参与项目的人而言,时间广场成为了我们记忆中最独特的一部分。正是在与《日月》的一次次互动中,这件写字楼艺术品《日月》具有了不同意义,蛇口也成为了我们经历中难以遗忘的记忆。这都源于《日月》的独特魅力。
Today, looking back at this memory, we find that Time Tower has become our most unique memory for everyone involved in this project. It is in the repeated interactions with "The Sun And The Moon" that different meanings are given to this office artwork, and Shekou has become an unforgettable experience for us. This all stems from the unique charm of "The Sun And The Moon".
