Los Angeles , June 9, 2016 —The City of Los Angeles has officially announced the selection of a multidisciplinary team led by Los Angeles-based landscape architecture firm, Mia Lehrer Associates (MLA) and world-renowned architecture firm, OMA. The proposal was one of four design competition entries presented to the public earlier this year.

The two-acre park is positioned to be a key civic space in the city’s vibrant downtown core. The team’s design for First and Broadway Park, to be known as “FAB Park”, incorporates themes of land, food, and art to celebrate the exceptional diversity of Los Angeles.

Designed by MLA as the park’s frame, a lush layering of native plantings offers ample green space and much needed shade immersing visitors into the ecologically inherent and iconic “California Gold” landscape. An undulating ribbon of seat walls weaves through this landscape to form a series of shaded “outdoor rooms" for informal seating intimate gatherings. A central plaza space affords a highly versatile venue for large scale events serving the community including art installations and food fairs.

The park also features a split level restaurant and sculpted shade canopies designed by OMA to provide comfortably cool spaces of respite. Jason Long, OMA Partner and lead designer commented, “As a nexus for the district’s surrounding civic and cultural landmarks, FAB park will be a meeting point for civil servants, journalists, arts patrons and DTLA residents. Our restaurant design facilitates a range of experiences at the street level from test kitchen to amphitheater seating, as well as two distinct levels of service: quick and casual on the ground, refined and elegant above.”

The use of California-native plants will maximize comfort, shade and beauty, while minimizing the need for water and maintenance.

Maximizing the park’s potential as a destination, IDEO utilizes digital media and enhanced park signage to heighten the user’s awareness of the site’s ongoing curated events linking together the social draw of food and art.
