When we were asked to design the JH house, we were interested in continuing to explore the architectural and sensorial possibilities of the patio, the emptiness it generates with respect to the volumes that define it and the relationship with its content; a small and changing forest.
However, our client, had a very specific request, he wanted a house of 240 square meters built, in an area of 285 m2, leaving only 45 square meters available for our patio. The disproportion between the house (volume) and the void (space) (corresponding to 84.21% and 15.78% respectively) did not allow us a complete, important and significant influence between that void / forest and the rest of the house.
So we decided to divide those 45 m2 of patio into 26 sections of 7 different sizes and distribute them throughout the roof, thereby seeking to break the limits of a confined patio and extend its influence throughout the entire architectural program.
This solution allowed us to go beyond the traffic and the contemplation of a conventional patio, gave the possibility of immersively inhabiting this series of voids within which we located some trees, a kind of fragmented forest that surrounds practically all the spaces of the house
In the areas that required more privacy, we increased the density of the trees to try to visually close those spaces. The house opens up and integrates with the surrounding public space, linking the community garden that borders it on the right side with the street, and a wooded porch that the user walks before entering the room.
Once the house was finished, our client asked us for a second level that for two more rooms and a closed area to practice yoga. Our solution was to keep the initial concept to maintain the same home experience.
