The Property owner and the Architect Jean-Pierre LOTT wanted to question the relationship between humans and nature, and ultimately between nature and culture, by building a house in a rock, in an environment without disturbing it, by setting themselves a certain number of technical and architectural constraints:
• RESPECTING the landscape and ecosystem of the site
• DEVELOPING an astonishing architecture
• CREATING exceptionally comfortable living conditions
• TESTING innovative environmental solutions
• MINIMISING energy needs

The first challenge of this project was therefore to integrate the house into the landscape and not the other way around. The project was therefore managed back to front: the house was sculpted out of the rock. It was necessary to find the light, frame the views on the chosen perspectives and obtain the space by hollowing it out. The shapes formed and the vegetation recreated therefore retain the impression of natural rock with its cracks, cavities and strength, without ever giving the impression that it is a simple cladding for constructed walls.

So, you enter into the house through a ‘breach’ and reach a large reception room overlooking a pool, a metaphor for an underground lake: This is the idea of the cave. Walking through the rock as if you were passing from the light to darkness, the light is nevertheless omnipresent and filters through a tunnel which moves upwards from the top of the house. This sun tunnel organises the light and connects the different living areas. The rooms have openings which cross through the rock in the search for natural light: all the windows have different frames depending on whether they are in a bedroom or living room. They are an extension of the rock, they create a conversation between nature and construction.

The other challenge was ecological. At a time of global warming, the Villa Troglodyte is duty bound to be efficient, use natural energies, such as geothermal energy or solar energy, as well as treat and recycle grey water. It has been designed with a stated desire to respect the environmental and sustainable development commitments of the Prince’s Government and heralds the constraints of our future homes.

The house is arranged over 5 floors. You arrive at the hall on the ground-floor from the street by a footbridge overlooking the swimming pool. From the entrance the void and the glass floors give views over the whole house.

Insulating the swimming pool area and the other rooms, the glass ceilings also provide excellent moisture and temperature regulation for the house. You can also access this floor directly from the garage which, faithful to the design philosophy, is fitted with charging station for an electric vehicle.

The lower ground floor houses the swimming pool. It extends across the whole room, appearing like an underground lake within a cave, following the curved and random shapes of the rocks that cover the walls. A Turkish bath is also located on this floor to complete the wellness area.

You reach the upper floors by a staircase installed in the large sun tunnel of the house and bordered by a glass elevator. The first floor of the house contains the living room and the kitchen The living room opens out onto a large terrace bordered by the reconstituted rock where the views are framed via visual openings facing the sea. Recycled wood from mussel aquaculture piles is given a new lease of life as parquet flooring. It covers the floors of the living room and the walls of the kitchen where the rock is also visible.

On the second floor, you find two bedrooms, including the Master Bedroom. This also has a walk-in wardrobe and a large bathroom paved with mosaics with reflections reminiscent of quartz. A terrace, whose shape is in line with the general design of the rock, extends out from the room.

The third bedroom occupies the last floor of the house. It also has a fitted walk-in wardrobe and a comfortable bathroom.Recycled wooden parquet flooring also covers the floors here, adding strength and elegance.
