01 The Story Behind the Crystal Stone
In the six months since its opening, Shenzhen Universiade MixC has become the preferred destination for daily life and leisure among residents of Longgang and surrounding areas. As the landscape designers of this project, we have discovered through multiple follow-up visits and conversations with visitors that the key to its popularity lies in the seamless integration of commercial and public spaces. This success stems from our dual role: not only were we responsible for the commercial landscape design of Universiade Horizon [1], but we also oversaw the public space landscape design of the adjacent Universiade Center [2].
In truth, while the overt design draws inspiration from the "Crystal Stone" appearance of the sports stadium, the more complex and challenging aspect was the implicit design—harmonizing the interface between nearly 66,000 square meters of commercial and public spaces. Therefore, we believe it is necessary to provide a more systematic explanation of SIZE Landscape’s approach to designing public interfaces—one that goes beyond the superficial visual narrative of the "Crystal Stone" and instead focuses on how to blend parks and commercial environments into a cohesive whole, truly embedding them into the daily lives of urban residents.

02 The Opportunity of the Crystal Stone
The Shenzhen Universiade Center was once a vibrant landmark of youthful glory. In 2011, the 26th Summer Universiade kicked off here, leaving behind a precious stretch of public green space. However, due to the underutilization of the sports facilities in the following years, this green space remained in a state of neglect for over a decade. The post-event revitalization of large-scale sports venues is a widely recognized challenge—how can retired stadiums regain vitality and value? Cities around the world are actively exploring various adaptive reuse strategies. [3]
Against this backdrop, Universiade Horizon emerged as a park-like commercial complex, integrating retail, green spaces, and professional sports facilities. Developed, operated, and maintained by China Resources Mixc Lifestyle with government policy support and private-sector collaboration, it became a key urban renewal project highlighted in Shenzhen’s 2023 government work report. By adopting a "public + nature-centric design" strategy and an innovative "park + commerce + stadium" operational model, Universiade Horizon has successfully charted a sustainable path for repurposing large event venues. It now stands as a benchmark for revitalizing public spaces, reestablishing the Universiade Center as a city-level lifestyle and leisure destination.
As the landscape designers of this project, we seized the opportunity to stitch together the new commercial space with the old public greenery, seamlessly blending parks and retail into the daily lives of urban residents. Recognized as "a successful model of a nature-infused, healing commercial complex"[4], its transformation—rooted in ecology, driven by commerce, and bonded by public space—may set a new industry standard for revitalizing aging stadiums.

03 Returning to the Site: "Preserve, Protect, Retain"
The Shenzhen Universiade Center features a "one-stadium-two-venue" complex comprising the main stadium, gymnasium, and natatorium. These structures intertwine with an artificial water system that forms the structural framework of the Universiade's ancillary green spaces. The slender, ring-shaped South Lake wraps around the southern stadium and extends northward, while North Lake - the largest water body in the complex - sits between the gymnasium and natatorium. Prior to renovation, the naturally evolved vegetation along the waterways had developed a robust micro-ecosystem, serving as a crucial stopover for migratory birds passing through Shenzhen. However, years of neglect had left the public green spaces overgrown, with silted lakebeds and dysfunctional water circulation systems.
We recognized these legacy water systems and green infrastructure as the site's most valuable landscape assets for future commercial development. This understanding led to our foundational design philosophy of "preserving waterways, protecting vegetation, and retaining memory," implemented through three key strategies: 1) conserving the water system through dredging and wetland restoration; 2) safeguarding native trees and green boundaries wherever possible; and 3) repurposing on-site natural materials to maintain the spirit of place. This approach informed the project's unique commercial layout centered around public landscapes, with waterside building arrangements carefully orchestrated to complement the overall landscape design vision.

04 The Spirit of Publicness: "You in Me, Me in You"
The site's natural lakeside areas were densely vegetated, with almost no accessible pathways leading to the waterfront and very few spaces for visitors to pause and linger. Meanwhile, the areas surrounding the stadiums were overly exposed, lacking shade-providing greenery. The ecological potential of the existing green spaces remained untapped, creating a stark disconnect between the stadiums and the lakeside zones. In response, our design did not treat the commercial interface in isolation. Instead, we integrated it with its surrounding environment and considered the entire Universiade Center's landscape system as a whole for comprehensive revitalization.
The core vision was to create an experience where "while shopping, one's heart remains in nature." Through a holistic design approach, we crafted a unique immersive experience for visitors—strolling through a park while browsing shops, and exploring stores while meandering through greenery. The entire shopping and leisure journey unfolds enveloped in lush landscapes.

05 Artistic Essence: "Scattered Crystal Stones"
The three sports venues that hosted events for the 26th Summer Universiade made their debut with a striking "crystal stone" faceted design, becoming an iconic symbol of Longgang District. In the years following the Universiade, these venues frequently hosted major sporting events and cultural performances, cementing their crystalline image in the public consciousness. Inspired by this legacy, we poetically envisioned "scattered fragments of the crystal stones" as the conceptual foundation for the landscape design. These fragments echo the architectural language of the venues, collectively shaping a contemporary commercial complex that harmonizes with its surroundings.
Transformed into landscape features and functional elements, these crystalline motifs are expressed through a dynamic interplay of materials and forms. Each installation—whether a seating cluster, art piece, or pathway—carries distinct visual and tactile qualities, creating an ever-evolving spatial experience for visitors. Beyond mere aesthetics, these design elements serve as symbolic anchors, embedded throughout the environment to spark social interaction, movement, and artistic engagement. Like glimmers of light refracting through crystal, they become "luminous moments" that energize the space, ultimately composing a vibrant stage for urban life steeped in artistry.

Accompany with Water
The site's inherent aquatic advantages inspired us to create diverse waterscape experiences. By incorporating observation decks, walking paths, and waterfront furnishings, we've enabled citizens to connect with nature through various activities - from sightseeing and leisurely walks to outdoor exercise. These elements transform the water's edge into a vibrant social and recreational hub while maintaining ecological sensitivity.
Southern District Waterscape Platforms: The elongated commercial promenade along the southern lakeshore features strategically placed geometric platforms that serve multiple purposes: terminating retail walkways as visual pauses, framing picturesque lake views as scenic endpoints, and spanning across water to create interactive spaces. Through careful elevation changes, these platforms bring visitors closer to the water surface, while terraced designs provide ample seating areas, seamlessly blending commercial vitality with natural tranquility.

The circular boardwalk seamlessly connects commercial spaces with the lakeside greenbelt, incorporating rest areas such as lounge chairs, artistic landforms, forest boardwalks, and yoga platforms along the route. The waterside pathway gradually descends in elevation, enhancing visitors' immersive interaction with the lake. By strategically adjusting the density of trees in relation to the trail’s layout, the design creates varying degrees of woodland enclosure, offering pedestrians a dynamic and engaging experience. Winding along the meandering path, visitors encounter ever-changing scenic vistas—a deliberate design approach that fosters an "invitation and response" interaction between people and the landscape. This subtle choreography encourages exploration while allowing nature to reveal its beauty in unexpected ways.

The lakes at Universiade Center were once vital habitats for egrets in Shenzhen. However, due to prolonged neglect of the water bodies, these pristine "white spirits"—highly sensitive to water quality—had long abandoned the area. Through deliberate design interventions, we successfully invited the egrets to return. After consulting ornithologists and implementing their recommendations, we reconstructed the topography of select shoreline areas and islets, complementing them with carefully chosen vegetation to restore shallow wetlands ideal for egret habitation. The water depth in these shallows was precisely calibrated to reach just below the egrets' "knee" height—creating optimal foraging spaces while maintaining sufficient concealment to provide security and minimize human disturbance. Additionally, repurposed tree stumps and strategically placed rocks were designed as multi-species resting spots, fostering a biodiverse ecosystem. These efforts collectively welcome back these graceful "lakeside sentinels" to their renewed sanctuary.

Low-Intervention Design
The site's existing mature trees represent its most valuable natural assets. Through careful tree preservation and ecological restoration, we maximized retention of the canopy cover to achieve harmonious integration between nature and architecture.
Tree Preservation & Understory Vegetation Management: We prioritized protecting all large trees, particularly those already forming quality shade canopies. When laying pathways through dense groves, we meticulously maintained safe distances from tree root zones to avoid disrupting growth while ensuring immersive nature experiences for pedestrians. Selective thinning of mid- and understory vegetation liberated more usable space. These naturally shaded outdoor areas prove more comfortable than air-conditioned interiors, offering unique vistas and gentle breezes that create ideal decompression environments.
Albizia Courtyard: Three 30-meter-tall existing albizia trees flanking North Lake's southern entrance were preserved through innovative terracing. Three staggered retaining walls resolve elevation changes while defining a sheltered courtyard, softening architectural edges. Viewing these graceful trees from ground-level courtyards or second-floor terraces immerses visitors in a soothing, nature-wrapped ambiance.
North Lake Tree Preservation & Topography Adaptation: At North Lake's central section, healthy autumn maple trees presented elevation conflicts between existing grades and design plans. Our solution created terraced topography to reconcile height differences, resolving circulation challenges while offering visitors multi-level viewing perspectives and enriching the landscape's spatial dimensionality.
We used the existing bald cypress as the structural framework and supplemented it with species of the same origin to expand the native plant community. Along the waterfront, we planted South China native species—royal poinciana and golden trumpet tree. The royal poinciana’s airy, umbrella-shaped canopy creates a more relaxed, shaded space, while the golden trumpet trees are planted in linear bands along the shore, echoing the geometry of the waterfront promenade. In spring, their bright yellow blossoms become key visual nodes that guide pedestrian flow, enhancing the ecological integration of vegetation and water.

Interaction with Architectural Spaces: The infusion of natural elements extends seamlessly through the commercial district, allowing visitors to not only admire the grandeur of mature trees while shopping but also engage with them intimately. When strolling along second-level skywalks, one can even reach out and touch the foliage. This transforms the commercial area from a sterile, concrete-dominated environment into a vibrant, living landscape—where architecture and nature coexist in dynamic harmony.

Repurposing Existing Materials
To minimize waste, we meticulously cataloged and numbered the granite steps removed during demolition, later reintegrating them into the site through creative reassembly to preserve its historical essence.
Granite Reclamation: The salvaged granite was thoughtfully redistributed across the site, preventing resource waste while giving the stone new purpose and meaning. Integrated into the landscape design, these repurposed slabs now function as seating beneath tree canopies—blending ecological awareness with historical continuity while creating distinctive spatial experiences. Bathed in dappled sunlight, the revitalized stone tells an evocative story of time and nature intertwined, embodying both sustainability and emotional resonance.
Adaptive Reuse Strategies: Existing seating tiers were innovatively transformed through recessed rotational installations, creating circular arrangements with varied heights. This design accommodates users of different statures while adding layered spatial dynamics and playful interaction opportunities to the environment.

07 The Most Open Urban Plaza
Surrounded by a diverse mix of commercial, office, residential, and educational developments, the Universiade Center seamlessly connects with the Universiade Smart Park, Shenxian Ridge, and Longcheng Park. The design aims to integrate the "Universiade Horizon" commercial district with the public spaces of the Universiade Center while activating circulation routes and key nodes to create a vibrant plaza that meets the diverse lifestyle needs of citizens and strengthens connections with the surrounding environment. To echo the Universiade as the overarching spiritual IP, we introduced the concept of the "Universiade Athlete's Home" during the conceptual phase. Corresponding landscape nodes were thus named with sports-related themes to reinforce this conceptual framework. Below are four of the most representative nodes:
Starting Block Plaza: The Starting Block Plaza forms a three-dimensional spatial experience comprising the ground-level main plaza, a central atrium, and a second-level loop corridor. Located at the southeast corner of the site near the metro station, the main plaza is enclosed by buildings from the southern zone of Universiade Horizon, with its central area reserved for festivals and art displays. Upon entering the plaza, visitors can proceed to the atrium and then access the second-level loop corridor via escalators, achieving a multi-layered transition between indoor and outdoor spaces. As the sunken plaza is relatively compact, we deliberately selected the Pithecellobium dulce, a species with a tall, clean trunk. Its layered pinnate leaves and spreading umbrella-shaped crown not only increase the greenery but also maintain open sightlines at the lower level. The distinctive leaf texture adds strong botanical identity to the space.

HIFUN Waterfront blends commerce and nature along Universiade Horizon's southern lakeside, featuring dining venues and three access points for easy circulation. The design creates parallel experiences: an inner commercial street connecting the Starting Block Plaza to a stepped event space, and a greener waterfront promenade with terraced platforms that transition smoothly to the lake. The northern end offers premium lake views and flexible space for commercial activities, while the multi-level decks enhance waterside engagement and outdoor dining opportunities.

Warm-up Lawn: The most expansive public space between the northern and southern districts serves as both a leisure area and festival venue. Tree planting preserves open sightlines while newly added fishpole bamboos complement existing trees, enriching the greenery. Repurposed stone furniture dots the lawn in organic clusters, creating user-friendly resting spots amid the undulating terrain.

08 The Ultimate Fashion Experience
By seamlessly integrating public and commercial spaces, we achieved greater creative freedom in detailed design. Inspired by "scattered crystal fragments," we incorporated this motif throughout paving, furniture, landforms, and platforms to create a fashionable urban stage that dialogues with the architecture. These seemingly fragmented elements appear in varying scales and forms, perfectly complementing the venue's contemporary artistic atmosphere.
The paving became a signature feature, mirroring the stadium's facade through gradient "crystal fragment" patterns that blend aesthetics with functionality. Dark tones dominate commercial zones while light hues define pedestrian areas. Using modular design to simplify construction, we deconstructed and reassembled complex paving variations - maintaining visual diversity and organic randomness while ensuring buildability. The carefully arranged modules produce a rhythmic yet cohesive visual effect, striking an ideal balance between practicality and beauty.
Extending this concept, custom-designed landscape furnishings and features echo the paving language, enhancing spatial continuity and playfulness. Together, they create an ever-evolving visual experience that keeps the space dynamic and engaging.

The sculpted landform harmonizes with the main stadium's crystalline architecture through angular formations that serve dual purposes. In the south, terraced triangular slopes at the commercial entrance artfully direct views toward both the stadium and shopping district, while the north features playful geometric mounds near the parking area that naturally invite children to climb and explore. These elevation changes create dynamic visual interest while serving distinct functional roles across the site.
A series of triangular waterfront platforms along the promenade employ stable geometric configurations to maximize space efficiency. Positioned at key vantage points, these structures simultaneously maintain visual continuity while framing picturesque views of the lake and architecture. Their precise angular arrangement creates an evolving visual dialogue between natural and built elements, offering visitors multiple perspectives as they move through the space.

09 Revisiting "Commerce in a Park"
Unlike typical "commercial projects in parks" that simply recreate park-like atmospheres, Universiade Horizon represents a fundamental paradigm shift - seamlessly weaving commerce into the park's existing fabric to achieve a true synthesis of nature and retail. The 66,000 sqm project's success stems from prioritizing public space integration within tight constraints, systematically merging new commercial zones with preserved greenery. This approach required balancing creative vision with technical pragmatism - where ecological sensitivity met commercial viability, and artistic ambition coexisted with construction realities.
The results speak for themselves: 200,000+ opening day visitors, 4 million+ in the first month, and sustained daily averages of 80,000 (peaking at 160,000 weekends). These metrics validate how nature-infused commercial design can redefine urban experiences.
