In an era when old urban areas are normally demolished and redeveloped into high-density high-rise buildings, street spaces like the one where this project is located, which serve as the center of local communities, are becoming increasingly rare and precious. In order to create a place that children in the community love to visit, we designed it to be cute and playful.

背景
Background
"Blue Sports Park" is a public welfare project initiated by Ant Foundation in 2022. "Xinhua Blue Sports Park" is the first project in Shanghai completed by the organization. This community park is in lane 345, Xinhua Street, Changning District, covering an area of about 436 square meters. It is a child-friendly sports park at the doorstep in Xinhua Community. It uses blue color as to relate to the theme color of the foundation.

The lane 345 is about 200 meters long. There are five low-rise buildings in the lane. The space in front of Building No.5 at the end of the lane is the site of this project. Building No.4 is a two-story Xinhua Community Center with an area of about 840 square meters. The Center includes exhibition hall, workshop space, community cafe and shared canteen, co-learning space, office space, and small theater (multi-functional activity space). A team called Dayu Yingzao operates the facility and plans various activities, aiming to create harmonious community life with residents in the neighborhood. We have been supporting their activities for many years, and this time we are working together to carry out this community park project.

Design Concept
This small park renovation is unusual, because it is neither a park built by the government, nor a park built by a developer. Instead, it is a park built by the community with social funds. Typical children's parks are lined with ready-made recreational equipment with similar configurations, but we designed this community park to be unique and playful with many custom-made elements.

Site Planning
Before the renovation, cars often drove into the alley and parked everywhere. The plan is to transform this alley into a car-free community space. The park site was designed with four elements, the first the nature exploration trail covered by trees along the back wall, the second the ground painting at the flat plaza, the third the basketball hoop, and the fourth the tree climbing play structure.
In the nature exploration trail, we had an initial idea of making flower beds and wooden stake trails between the existing trees over 10 meters tall. But, in the process, it was decided to be untouched. Later, the community members jointly built a tower-shaped play facility made of recycled materials. We deliberately made an incomplete plan for this area so that the community groups could fill in the blanks, which enhanced the personalization of the park and the community's sense of belonging.

Ground Painting Design
We designed a circular basketball court in the middle of the park. The curve of the circle brings a soft impression to the park, and the non-standard basketball court allows children to flexibly create their own plays. We likened the circle to an island in the blue ocean and designed seven "underwater monsters" around. By using abstract shapes, we encouraged children to use more imagination.

Unique Basketball Hoop
The basketball hoop is not a ready-made product neither but is designed particularly for the park as a collection of multiple rings at different heights. By setting one of the rings at a lower position, young children can also enjoy shooting balls. The unique hoop design creates a joyful atmosphere for the sports park.

Tree Climbing Structure
We installed a tree climbing play structure at a corner of the park. The children put their foot on the tree, push it with their palms, hug the trunk with their arms, sit astride the trunk, exchange positions with friends, lie on their backs, and slide down on it. Faced with this play structure without clear instructions for use, the children began to play with their bodies, feeling the "friction generated by the material" and the "gravity generated by the slope". This is a low-cost project. The material used in the play structure is the parts of municipal steel water pipes. They are assembled only by cutting and welding, without the need for complex processes to customize bends or curves.
