缘起
How the idea starts
Located in the city center of Baoshan District, Shanghai, the project had undergone nearly ten years of design and construction since 2015, was completed in civil works and interior decoration, and came into operation in 2024. It is the first city renewal project in the true sense that the studio has ever undertaken.
Time flies, and city develops, and extant historical architecture like Baoshan Cultural Center in the city center has attracted the public attention for renovation and utilization. In terms of design, the renovation of a building is more than the regeneration of the physical spaces, but also a revolution to revitalize the entire area. Therefore, our goal is to deliver such a design that meets the architectural requirements while harmonizing with the physical and social environments in the neighborhood.
Baoshan Cultural Center ever since its birth in 1985 has been the vehicle to communicate cultures and serve the public. In 2005, it was renovated and upgraded once. The extant building, however, was limited in space and outdated in appearance, unable to meet the people's spiritual pursuit. And the decrepit structure and old facilities further damaged its role it should have played in the cultural service. It needed a thorough overhaul. It has been our desire to align buildings with modern social and cultural needs, so that they may represent a city's style of ease, openness and inclusion, reshaping the cultural character of buildings.

We tease out building functions thread by thread
Question No. one, the most important one, is to upgrade the interior functional spaces through renovation. The cultural center accommodated a large number of functional spaces, i.e., theater, showroom, cinema, classroom, studio, and administrative offices, and the diversified functions complicated the interior circulations, and made the space somewhat oppressive. The ground floor commercial spaces along the street belong to different owners, posing a considerable challenge to the design and renovation works.
Based on the space functions and ownership, we decided to renovate the building by three functional zones. In the first place, the theater. The theater is the core of the cultural center, which is rather complicated in spatial structure. It is, however, very close to the neighboring residential buildings, only a dozen or so meters apart, therefore, we gave up the idea of major demolition and reconstruction, and preserved the principal space. Instead, we upgraded the stage and the interior decoration of the audience hall. Secondly, the north multifunctional hall and office spaces. These spaces are above the ground floor commercial spaces by the street, of which the business operation cannot be disrupted. Therefore, we preserved the upper structures, and reorganized the interior spaces only. Lastly, the south entrance. The south entrance, together with the outdoor square, represents the image of the building, and we made it our key space to dismantle and redesign.

We swap spaces to reorganize circulations
Once the spaces to dismantle were determined, the designer reconsidered the dimension of each space, and designed three atriums of different sizes to connect various functional circulations. Meanwhile, the skylight in the roof introduces natural light into the space to dispel the oppressive feel. The hallway inside the entrance is the key area of the entire space, where the designer throws in a 4-floor high atrium to accommodate show spaces, experimental theater and lounge area, establishing a dialogue from top to bottom. Stairs in different directions connect upper and lower spaces, and guide the traffic to various functional zones. The space border is designed in piano curves to create a flowing, artistic feel, as well as a liberal and vigorous character. Facing the Fuyou Square, the curve French windows on the ground floor afford visual communication and interaction indoors and outdoors, and the 4-floor high glass walls and perforated aluminum panels above introduce soft light into the hall. Under the triangle lighting tarp at the top, decorative aluminum panels are installed as sunshade, which adds at the same time more perspectives and layers to the space. As the sun moves, the light passes through the tarp and perforated aluminum panels, and falls on the walls and floors, presenting a miraculous effect of changing light and shadow. This is an artistic world of light and shadow, away from the hubbubs of the city for the enjoyment of tranquility and sweet sunshine.
The north show space and multifunctional hall have a square atrium above the second floor. The stairs are designed together with the exhibition space around the atrium. Natural light comes through the skylight to illuminate the dark space below and the functional circulations. The administrative offices are arranged around the narrow atrium, where plantings and seats are installed to create a comfortable, relaxing space. The same outdoor policy is adopted for the design of the theater. White and timber-colored wavy panels are used in the audience hall for the audience to catch melodious notes and rhythms in a soft, flowing space.
The internal spaces are reorganized to optimize functional circulations, making the spatial relations more lively. Through smart transition and connection designs, interfaces are established between independent regions in the building, meeting the diversified functional demands while creating an open yet private, modern and cozy atmosphere.
We brush up city image by lightening the heavy
"Lightening the heavy" is our principle for the design of the overall air and image of the building. We hope to give its heavy rectangular appearance a relaxing and lively attitude so as to attract citizens to it.
The west and north sides of the building are close to the neighboring residential buildings. Unauthorized structures are removed, and no major modifications are made to the façade. The windows are replaced, though, and the walls whitewashed to improve the visual effect without disturbing the neighbors. In the design of the south main entrance, curve lines are adopted to replace straight angles, and a gentle transition from the street interface to the entrance square is created, softening the majestic image. The streetside and the square are two architectural forms transverse and vertical, respectively. They are the window to proclaim the image of the building. A two-layer surface is installed. The inner glass walls ensure indoor transparency, and white perforated aluminum panels are installed outside layer by layer to produce a light and romantic feel. The aluminum panels screen out part of the strong sunshine during the day to create an indoor space of light and shadow. During the night, as lights are turned on, the indoor lighting radiates here and there, turning the building into a lighthouse in the mist. The glittering light penetrating the panels blends with the streetlamps, wrapping the street in a dreamy silk curtain. The former rigid, majestic image of a cultural power has now metamorphosed into a white-clad youngster, gentle and amiable, adding a touch of youth to the community.
We create an artistic atmosphere through light and shadow
In the employment of architectural spaces and materials, the designer aims to produce an effect of purity by a single color and material. The fluidity and lightness of light and shadow are the key of expression that a designer desires when designing buildings and interior spaces. The old neutral surface is changed to white perforated aluminum panels that offer fine layers and rotation of light and shadow, and serve as the focal point of the entire building. Aluminum panels of seven different perforation percentages are employed. They are arranged in such a way as to form façade modules of various sizes and multiple perspectives, rolling up and down and changing gradually with the shape of the building. Light comes out of the holes of various sizes to produce a kaleidoscopic effect, changing the building shape in a pure, delicate fashion. As time flows between light and shadow, each person feels his concern is taken care of in the public cultural space.
The double-layer surface at the entrance hall is smartly and minutely processed. The 4-floor high double-layer glass walls adopt thick mullions, which are concealed between the inner and outer surfaces to produce a light and transparent effect. To imitate the daylight at different moments, we installed 800 mm white rectangular aluminum panels under the skylight, which cut off direct sunbeams, ensure indoor lighting, produce a wonderful light and shadow effect, and create a quiet cultural and artistic atmosphere.
结语
Epilogue
Nearly ten long years of renovation and construction is a complex process full of uncertainties, and the design has been adjusted from time to time. The outbreak of COVID-19 also delayed the completion of the construction, and increased costs. It was not without mixed feelings that the neighboring residents looked at the renovation works: they hoped the renovation of these old buildings may enliven the community culture, but the noise and traffic congestion during all these years had surely taxed their patience, and some had even complained to the authorities.
The project is now put into operation, and its cultural activities, scientific space layout and elegant architectural design have won the public approval. We have noticed, however, that the user scenarios today are quite different from the business planning ten years ago, and have affected the use of some spaces. The completion of the project is hardly the accomplishment of the mission to reshape the cultural character. We expect the building will be properly used, operated and improved in its new lifecycle to complete its metamorphosis in an open, inclusive manner, and better serve the public.
