The project is located in the Financial City area of Chengdu High-Tech Zone. It is a pedestrian-only, deck-type green bridge spanning the Jinjiang River, serving as a crucial link between the green spaces of East and West Jiaozi Parks. The bridge has a width of approximately 120 meters and a length of about 1100 meters, covering an area of 12,300 square meters. Combined with the landscape renewal of the connected green park areas on both sides, the total project area reaches approximately 38,000 square meters. Starting from Jiaozi Park (West District) in the west, the bridge crosses Kehua South Road (a southern extension of Hongxing Road), the Jinjiang Greenway, Jinjiang River, and Guohua Street, terminating at Jiaozi Park (East District). The bridge is divided into three main sections: the river-crossing main bridge, the overpass (crossing Kehua South Road), and the access ramps and stairways. Four spiral stairways with elevators connect to the municipal roads, while the eastern end of the main bridge features one additional stairway and ramp connecting to the Jinjiang Greenway.

As the unit responsible for the scheme development and construction drawing design, we reorganized the integration with the ground green space system and restored the interaction between the riverside greenway and the bridge park, based on the overall planning and design of the Jiazi Bridge. At the same time, we presented the implementation of the bridge green space system within the structural limitations of the bridge park's overall extreme design. This achieved an effective connection between the east-west green space parks and the north-south multi-dimensional strolling system. Together with the riverside greenway system, we created an interconnected public landscape open space, offering a recreational and immersive natural environment for the public.

Based on this premise, the bridge design team proposed the concept of a slab-type bridge park, which ensures that, while maintaining the basic functionality of the bridge for traffic, it also maximizes the integration of the east-west park green space system. Walking on the bridge is akin to being within the overall park system. Additionally, the team introduced the idea of transitioning from a simple slab bridge to a dynamic lotus leaf-inspired composite bridge, drawing structural inspiration from the stems of lotus plants in nature. This design created 10 major spatial nodes, enhancing the richness of the bridge’s strolling experience and realizing a green, open, and fully shared garden on the bridge.

Fundamental Information at the Outset of Detailed Bridge Park Design
Due to the restrictions imposed by river management on the number and diameter of bridge piers, the structural design of the bridge deck faced high demands. During the detailed design of the slab section, the structural design team addressed this challenge through multiple rounds of discussion and calculations. Ultimately, they supported the entire bridge deck with four bridge piers, resulting in a clear height of 8.8 meters under the bridge, a pier diameter of 2.5 meters, and a pier spacing of 67.5 meters. This solution not only ensures the clearance required for navigation beneath the bridge but also gives the entire bridge system the appearance of a "green floating island" hovering on the Jinjiang River—light and futuristic.

The ultra-slim structural columns effectively support the bridge deck, but the load-bearing capacity of the deck remains highly constrained. Within a 4-meter radius at the center of the main circular platform, tree planting is planned, with calculations based on an equivalent soil depth of 1.5 meters and a load of 27 kN/m². In the 4-meter range adjacent to the pedestrian walkway, evenly spaced circular tree planting at 4-meter intervals is planned, calculated as a 150 kN concentrated load. The steel structure of the bridge provides a 5 cm thickness reserved for the final deck surface, which must accommodate the integration of all bridge systems, including drainage, power and lighting systems, and specialized pipelines. Additionally, it requires a high-performance pavement that resists tension and deformation. Achieving this necessitates comprehensive, integrated planning to ensure seamless execution.

Clear Structure: Establishing Key Implementation Conditions and Interconnected Elements
At the outset of the design development, we discussed and organized the thematic content of several key nodes on the bridge deck. This required consideration of materials, manufacturers, implementation paths, and conditions, while also integrating these factors with the structural characteristics and material properties of the bridge itself. We then worked backwards to deduce the relationships between these elements, including their combinations, network logic, spatial configurations, and material sensations. The challenge of the project lies in the pioneering application of multiple technical integrations, which are a first in the country. This posed significant difficulties in the early-stage coordination and design arrangements.
Early Work: Mapping Out Key Nodes for Design
After discussions with multiple suppliers and consultant teams across various disciplines, the combination relationships of the various nodes were ultimately determined. This led to the establishment of the sequence for design detailing. For instance, considering the water supply needs of various landscape nodes, multiple potential pathways for delivering water to the bridge deck were explored. These pathways required interdisciplinary coordination to develop an initial implementation plan, which was further refined based on input from stakeholders such as the project owner and property management. The finalized implementation plan and technical drawings were derived through this iterative process.Delivering water to the bridge deck necessitated additional coordination with bridge designers to hide pipelines wherever possible. Since the surface layer thickness of the bridge could not accommodate pipes, alternative routes were identified along the sides of the piers to avoid energy loss and ensure the efficiency of pressurized water features. Pipeline pathways were designed to remain within a 120-meter limit, ascending through limited perforations on the bridge deck to reach designated landscape nodes. Challenges of this nature required continuous interdisciplinary collaboration throughout the detailed design process to achieve the optimal final presentation.

Implementation of Bridge Deck Colonnades
In the initial planning phase, large eave-like colonnades were incorporated into the bridge deck park design to provide shelter for pedestrians, enabling rest while protecting against wind and rain. Recognizing the potential for gathering crowds, these colonnades were also designed to accommodate future operational needs, offering multifunctional and adaptable spaces for various uses.

Given the bridge’s location within the river channel, multiple factors—seismic resistance, wind loads, and structural load capacity—posed significant challenges to the structural testing of the large-span cantilevered colonnades. The largest, Colonnade No. 1, features a cantilever width of 16 meters. To achieve an ultra-thin and sleek edge profile, numerous structural iterations were explored. Ultimately, a snowflake-shaped structural keel combined with tempered glass was adopted. The roof center was carefully designed with a concave profile, forming a low point for rainwater collection. Rainwater is drained through the bridge pier columns, ensuring ample shelter underneath the colonnade from wind and rain. The colonnade is tensioned using a net-like structural keel, with the edge beam height minimized to 420 mm. The structure remains exposed, maintaining its minimal height. Curtain wall specialists seamlessly integrated the external finish in the central area of the main keel, achieving an elegant curved transition to the final surface.

水幕SHOW场
Water Screen SHOW
The bridge deck park is a key landmark for future Jinjiang River night tours. To enhance this experience, an interactive mist screen was installed in the open central area of the bridge deck. Utilizing the elevation difference between the bridge and the water surface, pressurized water jets create vertical mist columns. Integrated light and sound effects, combined with six hidden projection devices set beneath the circular ceiling structure, project visuals onto the mist screen at precise angles.

Maintenance was a critical consideration. After evaluating and rejecting solutions like electric lifts or boat-based repairs, an internal circular maintenance catwalk was incorporated into the bridge’s structural cavity, enabling safe and efficient access for maintenance.

While the nighttime experience is captivating, the daytime design also complements the theme with a manmade rainbow feature. The system uses pressurized water jets (with controlled, harmless outlets) to form upward mist columns. Through real-time testing of the sun’s elevation angle after bridge construction, the optimal position, angle, and viewing times were identified to create a 20-meter radius optimal observation point.

The water feature consultant, Susui Design, conducted on-site angle and data measurement and collection on the bridge deck according to the original planned location of the rainbow. After analysis, it recommended a more suitable location for the rainbow. We carried out the implementation design based on the new location to ensure a balance between technical feasibility and amusement.

Although the pressurized water jets achieve the desired effect, they are highly susceptible to wind and require water recycling for sustainability. To address this, the design evolved to create a playable water space for both children and adults. Utilizing a circular water zone, the pressurized nozzles are safely hidden, and rounded-edge forms ensure safety. The water area doubles as a playful waterway during the day and transforms into a magical nighttime playground with starry lights and projection lighting effects. This design ensures an engaging, interactive experience for visitors of all ages, seamlessly transitioning between day and night.

On one side of the approach bridge, a playful water park was designed, inspired by the concept of colorful dewdrops on lotus leaves, aiming to recreate an iridescent interactive water feature. The design ensures visual appeal whether the dry fountain is active or inactive. Considering the high number of visitors during summer evenings for strolls and recreation, the integration of lighting effects with the water fountain enhances the interactivity and playability of the space.

Through detailed design and careful integration of multiple disciplines, the key nodes achieve a vibrant, interactive, and functional bridge park that provides distinct day and night experiences with intelligent control systems. This creates a versatile leisure destination, offering a variety of engaging and interactive experiences for the public.
Essential Components of the Bridge Park: Planting Chapter
Due to the river’s navigational requirements, the bridge design prioritizes ample clearance and width below to ensure the waterway's flow capacity and vessel passage. The bridge deck is supported by four columns, each with a diameter of over 2 meters. This configuration imposes stricter limitations on the bridge’s overall load capacity. The pedestrian bridge, constructed entirely of steel, requires careful design and control of all deck systems, including planting soil, vegetation, amenities, paving, and utility networks, to meet these structural constraints.

The all-steel bridge structure poses challenges for plant growth due to its thermal conductivity. In high summer temperatures, heat transfer can elevate the planting substrate temperature, negatively impacting tree root systems. To address this, a waterproof, puncture-resistant protective layer was installed on the steel bridge deck, followed by drainage boards to provide insulation and drainage. Additionally, soil moisture sensors were placed near key tree roots to monitor real-time soil humidity and inform targeted maintenance efforts.

Large-scale trees planted on the Rainbow Lawn create a commanding visual presence.
Two planting methods were implemented for trees on the bridge deck.Spot Planting: For individual large trees on lawns, concealed planting pits were created to anchor roots securely while seamlessly blending with the natural landscape. Real-time soil and root condition monitoring ensures health and stability.Array Planting: Independent planting pits were used for rows of trees. Custom stainless-steel planters were lined with waterproof coatings, fixed onto the steel bridge surface, and filled with lightweight permeable materials. Integrated drainage pipes manage irrigation and rainwater seepage, ensuring optimal conditions for growth.

These measures ensure maximum tree survival and healthy growth. Following the project’s first summer season after completion, these strategies have proven effective in supporting tree vitality.
At the same time, during the design development process, we have worked to control the aesthetic and systemic characteristics of the tree species both on and beneath the bridge. On the bridge deck, we prioritized a single, expressive tree species with high adaptability to maintain the overall integrity of the bridge park. Beneath the bridge, we focused on creating a natural system that integrates smoothly with the riverside green space, fostering a flexible connection with the landscape.

Utilization of the Under-Bridge Grey Space
The riverside walkway on the west side of the park is relatively narrow, and the area beneath the Jiaozi Bridge feels particularly enclosed. Recognizing this space as a potential rest and gathering point, we explored opportunities to connect the space above and below the bridge and incorporate more functional elements. Therefore, we utilized the stepped retaining walls on both sides to create a recessed retaining wall, which expands the riverside walkway space. By integrating this with the location of the colorful water show, we formed a transparent, interactive space in the protruding area, allowing for visual connection between the upper and lower levels. Additionally, a small set of steps was added to the recessed space, along with the installation of water and electricity utilities. This design not only provides potential for future operational use but also resolves the issue of creating a viewing platform for the audience to watch the water curtain show beneath the bridge.

Effective Integration of Urban Interfaces: Enabling Spatial Connectivity

As the Financial City East District continues its construction phase, this green connection will play a pivotal role in attracting citizens to the Jiaozi Green Axis Park and the riverside greenway. With the planned development of surrounding industries and the introduction of various commercial and service-oriented functions, new consumption patterns driven by human activity and gatherings will emerge.During the early stages of planning and design, this factor was anticipated, and provisions were made in the spatial layout and functional design to accommodate future demands.

Following the opening of the Jiaozi Pedestrian Bridge Park, it has successfully linked the Jiaozi Green Axis Park and the riverside greenway, attracting a large number of visitors for leisure activities. Whether it is runners and cyclists in the early morning or evening, residents enjoying a post-work stroll, children playing in the water on summer evenings, or tourists admiring the night tours, the bridge offers a unique multi-dimensional experience.Over time, the park will reflect the changing seasons, offering a variety of evolving scenes and sensory experiences. Quietly accompanying the city's growth, the bridge stands as both a functional landmark and a witness to the area's development, fostering connections between the environment, the community, and the future of urban life.
