Starter Lab is a specialty sourdough bakery that first opened in Bali in 2017, and has since developed a strong following in the culinary community for its uncompromising quality and experimental approach to bread making with natural yeast.

For Starter Lab’s first international launch and second venue, the Singapore bakery features a café space, allowing customers to enjoy oven-fresh bread on location. Its menu offers a selection of toasts and sandwiches with ingredient pairings curated specially to showcase the flavour of their signature sourdough breads. Carefully sourced coffee, tea and fermented shrub and kombucha drinks are available in accompaniment.
面包店位于哈威乐道的一间旧店铺的一楼,展现出明亮而现代的美感。与传统的环境相映成趣,店面引发了路人的好奇心,培养了城市周边居民对这里的新兴趣。
Located on the ground floor of an old shophouse on Havelock Road, the bakery presents a bright and contemporary aesthetic. Juxtaposing with its traditional setting, the shopfront sparks curiosity from passers-by, cultivating a renewed interest in the neighbourhood from around the city.
店面远离街道,让行人有空间停留,欣赏橱窗里陈列的各种新鲜出炉的面包和糕点。室外的座位产生了活跃的气氛,与附近的中式和印度餐馆混杂在一起,并延伸到街上。
The shopfront is set back from the street, allowing room for pedestrians to linger and admire the wide array of freshly baked bread and pastries displayed at the window. Outdoor seating generates an animated atmosphere, mingling with the neighbouring Chinese and Indian eateries that spill out onto the street.
Entering through a sliding glass door, guests are greeted
by the sandwich and coffee counter with a backdrop of fresh bread displayed
behind it. The walls of the shop are adorned with product displays, indoor
plants and photographic artwork. A modular system of perforated panels,
adjustable brackets and plug-in components enable diverse modes of display,
expressing the space as a constantly evolving work in progress. A technical yet
playful aesthetic reflects the scientific discipline behind bread making, and
Starter Lab’s approach to work with the natural processes of fermentation,
leavening and baking to create original and innovative flavours.
Towards the rear of the shop, a clear glass partition reveals the production space. The bakers at work are on show behind the glass; mixing, shaping and kneading dough, or unloading the oven with a peel of fresh loaves. Around a central timber workbench, tools of the trade are arranged on wall-mounted shelves, and industry-scale machinery stands proudly in view. This theatre of production sets an energetic backdrop to the space, and visitors are invited to engage in dialogue with the bakery, gaining insight to the fermentation and baking process from start to finish, and the craft and care that goes into each loaf.
