Perched on an island’s edge in Lake Huron’s Georgian Bay in Canada, PARTISANS designed the Grotto Sauna – inspired by an Italian grotto, the sauna is a feat of old-world craftsmanship and new-world sustainability made possible by cutting-edge software and fabrication technology. The sculpted space plays homage to the northern Canadian landscape, blending it’s exterior into the rocky shoreline, while creating an experience of relaxation with its warm, curved-wood interiors that looks out onto the natural landscape.

The exterior is intentionally simple, built from charred cedar using the traditional Japanese Shou Sugi Ban method conveying a weathered appearance and hiding the structure in the undulating rock surface that gives Lake Huron its unique beauty. By contrast, the warm interior is created with reclaimed cedar that exercises skill by creating complex, amorphous shapes that emulate the lake’s waves and shoreline.

Building this ambitious structure in a remote and ecologically sensitive region posed a few challenges for the studio. To reduce construction impacts on the environment, PARTISANS prefabricated many components in Toronto facilities. To further minimize impacts, the studio conducted a 3D scan of the landscape to develop a meticulously accurate blueprint that would successfully establish the structure’s position in the rock that provides optimal views of Georgina Bay’s notorious sunsets. Additional sustainable elements include using reclaimed wood from local forests and using building products that were organically-derived or non-emitting. The sauna maximizes heat retention and energy efficiency by creating a high-performance rainscreen enclosure, spray insulation, and tripled-paned glass, while the faucet inside is fed by the lake water.
