At the end of 2024, Daxing Jizi Design was invited to create a public art installation for the 7th anniversary of the Sea World Culture and Arts Center (SWCAC). The resulting work, “Tide Catcher”, stands on the waterfront viewing platform of the center, facing the sea. It functions as both a visual landmark and a unique resting space for passersby.
Background: A Public Coastline
This is a public coastline. From dawn to dusk and dusk to dawn, day after day, “Tide Catcher” stands with the sea, swaying with the tide. From the platform above, one can look down upon the coastline and observe the ebb and flow of pedestrians—mirroring the rhythms of the sea.
Just a few decades ago, this area was a natural marine environment. Fishermen lived by the shore, depending on the sea for their livelihood. Today, skyscrapers line the coast, and the seafront has become a favored place of rest and recreation for the city’s residents—whether for walking, conversation, or simply gazing out over the water. The coast is the link that connects us to the vibrant and ever-changing world of nature.
Inspiration: Fishing Nets, Sunsets, and Tides
The fishing net is the conceptual starting point of *Tide Catcher*. Its form is expressed through an intersecting framework of metal rods and multicolored threads, evoking the image of nets hung out to dry.
Fishing nets are both tools of harvest and mediums of connection between people and the sea. The colored strings, fluttering in the wind, echo the ebb and flow of the tides—cyclical and ceaseless. The metal frame lends the structure strength and stability, embodying t

At the center of the installation, a glowing orb represents the setting sun. At night, it replaces the sun with a warm amber glow, offering light and comfort to those nearby. Time flows, life continues, and the city has transformed beyond recognition from decades past. “Tide Catcher” serves as a link between past and present—through its “net,” we seem to glimpse the sunsets once seen by the fishermen who lived and worked here.

The tides symbolize not only natural rhythm but also the force of life itself. The word “catch” implies active agency. Urban development relies not only on human innovation and endeavor but also on the support and tolerance of nature. We use the "Tide Catcher " as a metaphor to symbolize that the interaction between humans and nature is both proactive and respectful, expressing our gratitude for the power of nature.
Interaction: People, Society, and Nature
With the Audience
“Tide Catcher” is not just an artistic statement—it is an interactive and communal space.

Our city is changing with each passing day. As Shenzhen has grown from a quiet fishing village into a bustling metropolis, the sea has remained constant. As the city continues to evolve, so too will human curiosity and exploration. When there’s time, why not sit for a moment on the bench within “Tide Catcher”? Watch the sea, admire the sunset, and enjoy this very moment between yesterday and tomorrow.
No need to summon the tide—it comes and goes, in its own time.
With Society
The threadwork of “Tide Catcher” was handcrafted by women workers from the Green Rose Social Work Service Center in Shenzhen. Each knot and strand reflect careful attention and patience.

Conclusion
Standing at the water’s edge, “Tide Catcher” responds to the deeper relationship between nature and human activity amid rapid urban growth. It is intended as a spatial marker—linking past and future—and a gentle reminder to pause and cherish the present.
