In the heart of the Mayan Jungle in AZULIK City of Arts in Uh May are Roth Architecture´s HQ and The Temple. The Temple houses the Innovation and Technology team, including the FabLab and the Material Research Lab. Its core mission is to foster experimentation and the creation of materials and systems that enrich our architectural concepts. We believe that curiosity and critical thinking are expressed in the way we create.

The FabLab is a creative space that adds the value of technology to our craftsmanship approach, elevating our explorations towards sustainability and innovation. It brings together a team of experts to utilize advanced technological tools and express their design, manufacturing, modeling, and research capabilities. As a haven for creativity, the FabLab is the meeting point where experts leverage cutting-edge technology to bring their design, manufacturing, and research prowess to life. A synergy between Research and Development, and Construction teams creates rapid prototyping, molding, and advanced construction. Through the Global FabLab network, artisans, artists, and creators exchange ideas, fostering innovation and replication. As a collaborative endeavor, the FabLab also connects diverse cultures, sparking collaboration and co-creation. Our overarching strategy involves merging ancestral, contemporary, and artificial intelligence through bespoke materials, construction systems, and computational design solutions. The FabLab serves as a hub where diverse expertise and cultures converge. Surrounded by a rich jungle setting, it houses 3D printers, thermoforming machines, laser cutters, and water jets.

PROTOTYPING AND DIGITAL FABRICATION

Our design philosophy is rooted in the belief that every project demands its own customized approach, which requires us to develop specific and strategic workflows. We believe in the power of circular design to create different lines of information that enrich every design stage, from materiality to product design and construction methods. By merging multiple perspectives within our team, we can create active prototypes that serve as feasible proof of concept. Through the Fablab and use of technology we can create our own tools and embed new materials, electronics, programming, and digital fabrication into the development of physical and digital prototypes. Our advanced digital fabrication tools, including 3D printers, scanners, laser cutting, CNC milling, water jet cutting, and a 6-axis robotic arm enable us to engage in the production of fully
functional prototypes.

Our pursuit of enhancing what already exists prompts us to explore and question, employing research as a means to attain knowledge and drive innovation. The Research and Development team strives to create pioneering approaches to materiality and construction techniques that emphasize biodesign, biomaterials, biomimicry, and biophilia. We recognize that contextual awareness is pivotal, requiring a deep comprehension of the vernacular language within which we operate. Through extensive site analysis, we draw inspiration and understanding from history, culture, place, materials, and natural systems. We remain dedicated to the investigation of novel materials that can address specific needs for our designs and clients, and under the guidance of experienced professionals, we have produced physical prototypes that have been applied across various products.

Established by Roth, AZULIK’s founder and CEO, Roth Architecture is an internationally awarded firm that identifies with a way of designing, modelling, projecting, and building where nature and its preservation are a priority. As a creative team it aims to find original and eco-centric solutions to everyday life's needs; the studio reflects on architecture and its functionality to offer possibilities that incorporate the coexistence of the natural and the architectural. It takes as a starting point the dynamics of the inhabitants in the space and enhances their experience by creating immersive atmospheres that combine the presence of natural elements with architectural structures built with the lowest environmental impact.
