VISIT LIMBURG OPENS ‘CYCLING THROUGH THE TREES’ SECOND CYCLING EXPERIENCE IN LIMBURG RAISES CYCLING PARADISE TO A HIGHER LEVEL
The Limburg cycle route network has been raised to a higher level, both literally and figuratively. Following ‘Cycling through Water’ (#FDHW), Visit Limburg opened mid june ‘Cycling through the Trees’ (#FDDB), a brand new cycling and walking experience at a height of 10 metres through the treetops in Bosland. Igor Philtjens, chairman of Visit Limburg: “This is the second in a series of new cycling experiences spread across the province that will enable cyclists to experience the splendid natural beauty of Limburg in a unique way. We are demonstrating that Limburg continues to innovate as a cycling paradise, putting our province well and truly on the map!” The new cycle path is situated on the cycle route network near cycling junction 272 at the Pijnven, Bosland in Hechtel-Eksel.
‘Cycling through the Trees’ is a project by Visit Limburg resulting from a close co-operation. It is a ‘SALK’ project with financial support from LSM, the municipality of Hechtel-Eksel, VISITFLANDERS, province of Limburg, and was developed in close cooperation with Bosland and the Agency for Nature and Forests. Ben Weyts, Flemish Minister of Tourism: “Flanders is investing € 2.7 million in the various attractions that will raise the Limburg cycling network to an even higher level. We want to encourage as many people as possible to get on their bike. More cyclists also means more guests in Limburg’s hotels, more people on Limburg's terraces and more customers in local shops.” The municipality of Hechtel-Eksel is already delighted with the advent of the new cycling landmark, says mayor Jan Dalemans: “Thanks to ‘Cycling through the Trees’, we are raising not only our population and visitors to a higher level, but also our municipality and its tourism policy.” “This iconic cycle bridge will put Hechtel-Eksel and Bosland well and truly on the map. The next challenge for us as a council is to continue to market our green assets to the benefit of our economy,” adds Nele Lijnen, councillor with responsibility for Tourism & Bosland.
Cycle network of the future
The project is part of ‘Cycling Synergy’, Visit Limburg's strategy to add extra experiences to the existing cycle route network. The strategy is being implemented by means of a series of unique cycling experiences such as the world-renowned ‘Cycling through Water’ (#FDHW) in Bokrijk and ‘Cycling through the Heathland’ (#FDDH) in the Hoge Kempen National Park, which is due to open next year. In this way, Visit Limburg is continuing to build the cycle network of the future. Igor Philtjens: “The cycle route network is our greatest asset. That is why we continue to invest in it, along with the 42 towns and municipalities. But if we are to remain the number one in cycling tourism, we must innovate too. We do this by doing work or making additions at well-known strategic locations to further strengthen the interaction between cyclist and landscape and hence achieve leverage.”
360° experience at a height of up to 10 metres
The new cycle path through the trees, too, adds a unique experience to the Limburg cycle route network. Cyclists ride 700 metres along a cycle bridge - a double circle 100 metres in diameter - that rises gradually (gradient of 3-4%) to a height of 10 metres before then descending again at the same gradient, giving cyclists and walkers a sensational 360° experience. For the sake of safety, cycling is one-way and there is a subtle wire net with a handrail. The path is also wide enough (3 metres) to allow two cyclists to ride next to one another in comfort. The breadth of the path combined with the gentle gradient make ‘Cycling through the Trees’ an experience that is accessible to all.
At one with nature
Respect for flora and fauna was key to both the design of the cycle bridge and its construction in the forest. The project was implemented with nature as a companion and constitutes a logical link in the Bosland ‘Cycle of Life’. The forest largely consists of coniferous trees, planted at the beginning of the last century to produce wood for the mining industry. The closure of the mines meant the coniferous trees were never felled, but as they are all the same age, they still restrict the structural development of the forest. The ‘Cycling through the Trees’ project will now help to alleviate that situation. The work means that indigenous trees will have more light and space to grow, thereby ensuring that the forest resources are balanced. Marleen Evenepoel, Administrator General of the Agency for Nature and Forests: “It is hugely important to protect and develop the natural world and the Agency for Nature and Forests is working really hard on this. But I also think it is important for as many people as possible in Flanders to be able to enjoy the beauty of nature which is why I fully support this initiative. Bosland is an inspiration for the whole of Flanders and ‘Cycling through the Trees’ will only reinforce that.”
The trees that were felled to clear the space for the cycle path have been given a new life at the start of the route in the form of an information pavilion made from the stacked recycled tree trunks. Moreover, the coniferous trees are still represented in a symbolic way: the new cycle bridge sits on a structure of 449 unique columns made of weathered steel to symbolise the trunks of the fir trees, so the entire structure blends beautifully into its environment. “‘Cycling through the Trees’, along with the other cycling experiences, will have a multiplier effect for the whole of Limburg. It will strengthen our leisure economy, which will generate additional turnover for local restaurants and hotels and as well as new jobs, thereby safeguarding our reputation as the ultimate cycling paradise for the long term,” concludes Igor Philtjens.
