Coming home for the tranquil shelter.
What we tried to achieve through our design is a time garden with sense of belonging, which will stay in your heart and becomes a “healing” space of the future community.
Infusing your home with the sound of tranquility
Located in the Jiangbei CBD, Nanjing, this residential project covers a long and narrow rectangular area that stretches along Jiqing Road from South to North. On the north end of the plot, the developer hopes to create a 3000 sqm tranquil garden as the demonstration area, which will also be the pedestrian entrance in the future. We had to start from scratch because the surroundings of the demonstration area are still undeveloped. On one hand, we want to protect it from the construction going on around it. On the other, we need to consider how it will integrate with the exterior environment when the time is right.
Tranquil Waterborne Forest
A Floating Garden
The courtyard, an “internal environment” compared to the society outside and “external environment” to the indoor residential spaces, does not work as an independent organ. It needs to be the membrane that controls the light, sound, heat and wind flowing into the homes of the residents, while providing a landscape that is consistent with the indoor environment and touching to the viewers. In this green box, a 28 x 17 m perimeter set by the buildings, we need to carefully handle the environmental duality to create an enduring and emotionally-healing home to the residents.
Waterborne Forest is our new experiment based on the concept of natural environment integration. As the main body of the courtyard space, we planted a matrix of 20 zelkova trees on the water surface of the garden with 6 x 6 m intervals. The flowing water and spacing between the trees provide a cooling feeling in the summer and sufficient sunlight in the winter. The array of trees is parallel with the French windows of the buildings and vertical to the semi-transparent walls to make sure that the visitors enjoy the best viewing angle indoor or outdoor alike.
Bring Peace to the Home
Listen to the Quietness
To find a peaceful place for life, you can meet the poetic garden of self in the nature.
We hope that this peaceful courtyard becomes a special medium that touches people's hearts. This is more like a healing environment, soothing the soul with the sound of nature and tidying the heart, so as to obtain another kind of inner peace. To this end, we designed a variety of water sounds: tranquil, soft, rhythmic and jumping. At the same time, we have reserved sufficient space for biological habitats in greater scale: let the chirping of insects and songs of birds become one with the tranquility of the garden.
Leaving Blank in the Garden
From Something to Nothing
We hope to create liveliness and emotionfor this simple garden. The emotional feedback from the environment to the visitormay differ with their life experience and mood at the moment. But what we aimto achieve is that, when the sound of nature flows into the users’ ears, theycan break free from the “on the go” feeling of urban life and find their innerpeace.
This requires some compromise - wesimplified the decoration in the garden, rebalanced the proportion ofartificial elements over and over again, and eventually settled on a simple andelegant design that leaves more blank space for the user to encounter thechanging beauty of nature.
Randomness and Order
Joyful Surprise of the Nature
We want the trees in the courtyard to look alive and feel like the hosts of this tranquil pool. Seemingly linear and orderly, they are actually nuanced in alignment. From some angles they look like whispering to each other, from some they look like meditating in silence. When you look at the tree formation, you see simple lines of pillars and, through the seams of which, a new horizon being unfolded. The natural landscape outside the corridor comes in and out as you move and joyfully observe this random pattern of change.
Beautiful for Being Ephemeral
A Heart of Nature
No one wants their living environment or life to be set in stone. That’s why we have not incorporated too many fixed structures in our design. The unchangeable feature walls, pavilions and plantings… they may look beautiful for a while, but cannot stand the test of time. Can we somehow combine the courtyard with the changing natural environment? For example, the timing of nature: the remaining heat on the wall by the last rays of sunset, the swaying reflection of trees on the water, the gentle shimmering light reflected by the glass… They change every moment and form a natural beauty – beautiful for being ephemeral.
