This is an installation that I exhibited in the exhibition "LIFT11", which was held as part of the Cultural Capital of Europe program. It was an exhibition in which site-specific works were created here and there in the city.
In the center of Tallinn, the capital of Estonia, there is a forest called Katriorg. It is a vast forest made up of 300 year old trees that surround an old palace. In this beautiful forest of Katriorg, I created a small path that weaves through the forest in a fluttering motion. Walking along this path, you can see the forest a little differently. Instead of looking up at the forest from the ground, you approach the leaves and walk through the branches.
The main structure of this 95-meter-long path is made of 139-mm diameter steel pipes and 5-mm thick steel plates, and it is made up of trees that lean against each other in places. The trees in this place are a concrete part of the architecture, and without this forest, this flimsy pathway would not be possible. At the same time, I wanted this place to still be a forest even with the addition of human hands. It's hard to say, but I wondered if it would be possible to create a situation where the whole, including the forest, could be called architecture, and the whole, including the architecture, could be called a slightly different kind of forest.
This project was an attempt to create an architecture that would bring the environment itself into a new state, rather than building an architecture in a certain environment and thinking of a good relationship between the two. In the first place, a forest is a state that contains many different things. Not only are there lots of trees, but various animals live there, birds nest there, and mushrooms and flowers grow there. All of these things are collectively called a forest. My aim was to create an architecture that would expand the diversity of the environment by creating an architecture that is inextricably united in such a way.
